For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
1 Corinthians 15:3-5
What is the true meaning of Easter? During Lent we are preparing ourselves by giving up things that are important to us, thinking, praying, letting go, meditating for the purpose of cleaning our souls… But what comes next? Where are we going? What is our direction? What is the purpose of our Lent?
I like to think that if you work on something very hard, without losing direction and dedicating yourself to the process, you will get the result you desire. The purpose of Lent is to get as close to our Lord as possible by cutting all the things in our way! And we get “rewarded” by receiving the most amazing messages from Him like the deep meaning of this passage written by the apostle Paul.
When Christ died, his disciples were so afraid and confused that they ran and even betrayed Him. Perhaps we know what it feels like to run away from the truth. Even after all the miracles He showed to them and after everything they had seen, they ran directionless. The resurrected Jesus would eventually have to come and show proof that He is the risen Messiah. The fact that Christ was raised and appeared to Cephas (who betrayed Him) and then to the twelve changed the world for them. What was promised actually happened! After seeing Jesus raised from the dead, they were filled with the power of knowing and believing. They were now set in the right direction. Now they were ready to tell the whole world about Him….as we still do!
In invite you to attend Easter worship tomorrow at First United Methodist of Miami or another congregation near you to celebrate the good news Easter!
