Dr. Cynthia D. Weems has been our pastor since July, 2009. She is a Mississippian by birth where she spent her childhood as a “Pastor’s Kid” along with her three siblings. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Millsaps College where she majored in Religion and minored in History. She received a Masters of Divinity Degree from Yale Divinity School where she was a Yale Fellow and Student Body President. Later she graduated with honors from Saint Paul School of Theology with a Doctor of Ministry degree.
Cynthia has served congregations in Connecticut, Kansas and Florida as well as spending two years as a volunteer missionary in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She is passionate about living the Christian faith through mission and service and finds Miami to be one of the best places to do this!
Cynthia is a storyteller and dynamic preacher. She engages young and old alike and has a special commitment to the spiritual growth of children and youth after having been influenced by dedicated leaders throughout her own childhood and youth. She appreciates worship as an opportunity to sit – and stand! - in awe of a God who calls each of us to a special purpose and who delights in our strengths and in our foibles. She has long experienced the church as one of the most special places to live in relationship with other human beings – equally called and loved by God. And, she admits, those relationships make for interesting living!
She is an able administrator and leader. She is proficient in Spanish and Portuguese and loves the flavor of Miami as a city of language, sounds, spices and color. Cynthia desires to live authentically into the vision God has set for her and for each congregation she has served. “Living into God’s desire and purpose for us is what it’s all about,” she says.
Cynthia is married to Amauri Silva, a native Brazilian and naturalized U.S. Citizen. She is the proud stepmother to Aline, a seminary student, and Felipe, a seventh grader. They are all most proud of their youngest, five year old Mariana. She spends her free time running, biking and reading.
