But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Titus 3:4-7
Merry Christmas, friends! We come to the final day of our Advent devotions as we celebrate the birth of Christ and remember the gift of new birth offered by God’s love. As you celebrate Christmas, take a moment to touch your finger to a glass of water sitting nearby or run your hand under the faucet while you are washing Christmas dishes. With that water, touch your forehead and then close your eyes for a brief moment. In that time, give thanks to God for the very best present of all – a rebirth, a chance at new life.
Perhaps this Christmas you will not receive every gift you desire. Perhaps this Christmas your family will not sit nicely at the dinner table and fellowship without bickering. Perhaps this year your body is ailing or a loved one is sick. Even in the midst of an “unexpected” Christmas – one less full of joy than you might hope for – there is water. And this water represents the possibility of new birth and new life and new opportunities for each day. Feel the love of God for you this Christmas and know that you have received the greatest gift of all.
Many blessings to each of you this Christmas.
